Top Ten Tuesday: 10 New-to-Me Favorite Authors I Read for the First Time in 2015

toptentuesday2

Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish blogging meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish. This week, I’m focusing on books by ten authors I read for the first time in 2015.

nimona

Noelle Stevenson’s Nimona was one of my favorite graphic novels of the year for so many reasons.

phoebe and her unicorn

I never cared for unicorns as a child, but I’ve developed quite a thing for them–especially for sparkly ones–in my 40s. Dana Simpson’s series about Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils is everything a story about unicorns ought to be.

crossover

Kwame Alexander’s The Crossover is the first book my son has ever tried to read by himself–and Booked, his new verse novel to be published in 2016, is the second. I liked both books too, but even if I hadn’t, Kwame Alexander would still be my new favorite author.

lena finkle's magic barrel

Anya Ulinich tackles motherhood, writing, relationships, immigration, life in her evocative graphic novel, Lena Finkle’s Magic Barrel.

roller girl

Victoria Jamieson’s Roller Girl is about friendship struggles, strength, and finding yourself.

sorcerer to crown

Zen Cho, where have you been all my life? Sorcerer to the Crown was one of my favorite reads of the year, and her short story collection, which I’ve just started, is equally good.

ms marvel

I am digging G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel series for all the awesome things it’s doing with a female superhero who also happens to be a Muslim teenaged girl from Jersey City.

dept of speculationsparkyI have no idea how Jenny Offill pulls off incredible literary fiction for grown-ups and clever picture books.

hana hashimoto

Chieri Uegaki’s picture books paint rich and detailed pictures of children’s lives that fully honor the way the smallest moments resonate.

seconds

I don’t know how I managed to miss Bryan Lee O’Malley until 2015, but I did. Seconds remedied that.
